100 days | Olive Ruth

As I was updating my weekly photo folder with last wednesday's bath picture, I realized that the photo was taken on the 100th day of her life.

It's true what they say, once they are here you can't imagine life without.  I think she's a keeper.

100 days.  Crazy.

Fifty Two Pages | Jan 27 - Feb 2

++++++++++++++++++++++

Note: Apparently when I was prepping my posts for this week I was a day off on the calendar.  When this post didn't go up this morning I got to investigating and found I was off on everything.

I would apologize, but it actually works to your favor

Because the BUY1GET1 coupon code for the BE Print Shop is still working through TONIGHT at midnight.  Ooops. :)  So, if you missed it over the weekend, today is your lucky day!

DIY Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

I get some of my best ideas in the middle of the night.

Whether it be in dreams or in my half-awake stumper as I'm feeding my youngest.

I mean really good.

Like the time I woke up and grabbed my phone to type this genius thought about an upcoming sermon Bryan was writing,

remember:  tell b to play the "guess what's in the banana" game on stage.

(and yes, I thought it was brilliant, and no, I have no idea what in the world the "guess what's in the banana" game is…)

or the time in college, where I was sharing a bed with my roommate and I thought it was a great idea to poke her in the forehead with my pointer finger as hard as possible.  It had to be done.  In the moment it was necessary.  Afterwards I spent a very long time apologizing and laughing hysterically.

All to say, I have great ideas in the middle of the night.

Last night while I was feeding Olive, I had one of my greatest ideas yet.  Ellis and I should make Christmas ornaments tomorrow!   As always, I got out my phone to take a note of my idea as I knew I wouldn't remember in the morning.

Come morning, when Bryan and Ellis came barreling up the stairs to wake me up, I could remember I had had an idea, but couldn't remember what it was.  I got out my phone to look at the ideas that I had written down.

Make ornaments with E:  Salt dough.  cooking cutters.  make hand print turkeys.  let him paint them.

Well, I was 3 for 4.
But overall it was actually a great idea!

Salt Dough Ornaments:

1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water
1 cup flour
(I added a bit more water and then dredged in flour while rolling/cutting)

You just roll it out and use whatever holiday cookie cutters you have available.

Or, if you want to do handprint turkeys, err ornaments, I just split my dough into 4 pieces, balled it up and then smashed down into round circle like shapes.  Man, this is a super professional DIY.

I didn't get any pictures of the hand printing stages.  It happen very quickly and I tried not to make a big deal about the fact that we lost one of the circles due to an overzealous toddler who tricked me by doing the first 3 perfectly and then grabbing the last one so lightening fast and shoving half of it in his mouth. boys.

Take a poking device (I used a straw) and make a hole in each ornament for hanging.

Bake at 200 degrees for about 2 hours (or until they are no longer squishy)

Then strip down (your child or course) and paint away!

I was quite impressed with how much he actually painted the ornaments.  Of course there was a little leg painting…but that was to be expected.  Honestly, I was bracing myself for a lot less ornament painting and a whole living room covered in paint.

A little celebratory dancing while the ornaments dried.  He was so proud of them he just wanted to stand and look at his creation.  While it may not be the prettiest ornament on the tree, it most definitely is my favorite.

Fifty Two Pages | iPhone Photography + Shultz Photo School

Kendahl, I love the idea of your project, but wouldn't I get better photos on my nice expensive DSLR camera?

Well, sure.  Of course you would! (given you know how to use it...)

But how practical is it to take your big DSLR everywhere you go?  Heck, I'm lucky if I can even grab it fast enough inside my house, let alone remember to pack it and take it with me when I go out.  I mean how easy is it to fish it out of your bag, turn it on, get your settings correct, and snap away at that perfectly funny moment in the target check out line?  Not.

One of the core features of Fifty Two Pages is that it is all done on your phone.

The photos are taken on your phone.
Edited on your phone.
Put into a collage using an app on your phone.
Shared with friends and family through social media apps on your phone.
And ultimately will be sent to print in a 52 page bound book, through an app on your phone.

The purpose of this is accessibility.  What is the one thing we all have with us throughout the day?  (you guessed it..) Your phone.

As some of you know, I used to work full time for a local professional photographer.  I owe any and all of my photography and editing skills to him.  Kyle has a passion to teach others (specifically parents) how to take great photos of their kids.  That's where Shultz Photo School was born.  In his own words:

"What I am going to teach are the key concepts that make the largest impact on helping you experience the pure joy of creating meaningful images and capturing fleeting moments that would otherwise fade in our memory."

When I was in the dreaming stages of Fifty Two Pages, I sought out a bit of his help.  If I was going to have moms taking and sharing pictures of their kids, I wanted to teach them how to do it right!  Sure, capturing the moment is the most important part.  But, a few simple photography tips can help you capture those moments in a photo that you won't  ever forget.  When I asked him if he'd be willing to put together a little iPhone Photography lesson for me, he said he actually already had a series on  Camera Phone photography in the works!
Funny how things work out like that, huh?  :)

So, Kyle just released his first of a series of lessons and I'm so excited to share it with you: Camera Phone Photography Tips (Part 1)

Here's a couple photos I snapped today using his tips.  It's simple stuff, guys…but it really works :)

1. Typical Shot - Too much negative space:

2. Fill the frame:

3. Choose a better perspective:

4. Rule of thirds:

5. Edit Color/BW

Well, my foot is asleep and both kids have woken up from their naps so I must finish up.  Life is funny.

Go check out his lesson, and I promise you'll notice a different in your photos immediately!
